There has been much talk in the last few years about the vaping revolution, as millions of smokers around the world have eagerly switched to smoke-free electronic cigarettes for health reasons. With each passing year, the technology that empowers this revolution continues to evolve, as new features and benefits are developed by manufacturers. One of the hottest topics in the industry has been the development of greater user control over temperature – something that many are hailing as one of the most positive advancements in this area of technology. But is the move toward temperature controlled e-cigarettes a revolution or just a gimmick?
Before answering that question, it is helpful to first take a look at temperature control within the context of the electronic cigarette. As the name suggests, this technology provides e-cig users with the ability to exercise greater control over the temperature to which their e-liquid juice is heated. The reason this matters at all has to do with the interaction of the carrier liquids that provide both flavoring and nicotine to the user: Glycerine (VG) and Propylene Glycol (PG).
When VG and PG are overheated, their interaction can lead to the creation of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde – both of which are potentially harmful to human health. In addition, the US Government has noted that overheated electronic cigarette juice can create carcinogens that can be as harmful as those found in traditional cigarettes.
Temperature control thus becomes a way to minimize the risk of such chemical overheating, and thus maintain the lowest possible health risk for the user. Or so the argument goes. Naturally, there are those who argue that this is just another of the marketplace’s gimmicks designed to lure the uninformed into purchasing something for which there is no need.
Advocates say that controlling the temperature can help in another area as well: reducing “dry hits.” The dry hit is a phenomenon that most vaping fans have encountered at one time or another. Basically, it occurs after prolonged vaping periods, and is the result of the e-cig’s wick becoming too dry. When that happens, and your electronic cigarette’s coils get hot enough, the wick burns, and the user ends up inhaling a horrible-tasting dose of vapor.
Is This a Solution in Search of a Problem?
Still, there are some who might see this as little more than a minor improvement in technology that provides little appreciable reduction in risk. For most users, the chances of chemical overheating were already notably small, which means that the investment needed to upgrade to the new temperature controls might not be worth the cost. Moreover, some outside observers have pointed out that the nickel wire in the new units is less sturdy, despite the added cost. That kind of trade-off is less than acceptable to some users.
Besides, even many doctors acknowledge that electronic cigarette use is already far safer than traditional tobacco products, especially when you take into consideration the fact that those old burner cigarettes contain thousands of potentially harmful chemicals. Some therefore wonder why anyone would care about temperature controls when the actual safety benefits might amount to little more than a marginal improvement for a product that is already safer than other nicotine delivery systems.
Weighing the Benefits against the Costs
Ultimately, it is somewhat difficult to see these changes as any sort of “gimmick.” The fact is that the word gimmick is typically reserved for meaningless alterations that offer no real benefits- tricks used by clever marketers to entice unwary customers. Perhaps the new technology could be considered as such if it offered no real benefits at all, but no one is really arguing that case. Instead, skeptics have suggested that the real benefits that these controls provide are simply not worth the extra cost.
That is an obvious matter of opinion, and well-meaning people on both sides of the debate certainly have justifiable cause for their positions. At the same time, however, it is perhaps worth acknowledging that everyone agrees that there are benefits to maintaining the right e-cig temperature. No one is denying the dangers associated with overheated PG and VG, or the annoying experience that accompanies the dry hit. And since there are actual benefits that some people would consider worth the expense, it is scarcely conceivable that anyone could seriously consider this improvement a gimmick.
The fact is that the technology that empowers the e-cigarette revolution is going to continue to advance and evolve in the coming years, and these types of debates are likely to occur on a frequent basis. Hopefully, future proponents and opponents of various changes will be objective enough to carefully consider each new evolution’s claimed benefits before any rush to judgment.
